Mandriva linux

Yes, today - July 23rd, 2008 - is the tenth anniversary of the release of Linux-Mandrake 5.1, the very first public release of what is now Mandriva Linux. It was versioned 5.1 as it was a fork of Red Hat 5.1 (it was more or less RH 5.1 with KDE 1.0 added).

Here is the original announcement in English, and here is the original thread, in French, from the fr.comp.os.linux usenet group. History will record that the very first comment on Linux-Mandrake was someone complaining that something wasn’t packaged (xemacs) - so some thing never change…:)

I did look for a usenet thread in English, but couldn’t find one. Looks like the French one is all there was.

(We celebrated the anniversary of Mandriva itself earlier in the year - in May - but today is the birthday of Mandriva Linux, the distribution).

L’Install Party Spring a eu lieu dans nos locaux, au lendemain de la soirée anniversaire des 10 ans de Mandriva, à la Tour Eiffel. Une soixantaine de participants s’étaient inscrits sur notre Wiki pour l’évènement. Ils étaient encadrés par nos ingénieurs et développeurs qui les ont aidés à installer la Mandriva One 2008 Spring et leur faire découvrir les nouveautés. La fin de journée s’est poursuivie par un pique nique, qui finalement s’est déroulé dans nos locaux car le temps n’était pas avec nous et la soirée a continué avec des parties de StepMania très tard dans la nuit.

Cette première Install Party s’est très bien déroulée et les participants ont apprécié de voir l’envers du décor de Mandriva.

Deux semaines plus tard, d’autres évènement du même type ont eu lieu en France mais également dans le monde entier. Nous avons eu quelques retours d’organisateurs enthousiastes. La majorité a trouvé l’installation simple et les goodies ont été fortement appréciés.

Fin juin, Mandriva a accueilli dans ses locaux une équipe de l’émission : Capital, qui voulait réaliser un reportage sur les NetBooks, ainsi que sur l’univers de l’Open Source. La diffusion de l’émission aurait lieu début septembre (date que nous vous confirmerons), ce qui correspondrait à la sortie du dernier produit de la société Dexxon : le Gdium fonctionnant sur une version de Mandriva Linux. C’est donc, tout naturellement, que nous avons fait appel à notre partenaire pour présenter ce produit.

C’est au premier étage de la Tour Eiffel, lieu symbolique de la France, qu’une grande partie de la communauté de l’open source s’est donné rendez vous pour fêter les 10 ans de Mandriva. 230 personnes s’étaient réunies afin de célébrer l’événement. La soirée a commencé vers 19h avec un discours de François Bancilhon CEO, sur l’historique de la société. Puis, à tour de rôle, plusieurs intervenants, partenaires de la société se sont succédés:

Ces différentes interventions ont pu donner aux invités le ton sur l’avenir de Mandriva. Cet anniversaire fut également très enrichissant en matière de rencontres et d’échanges. Un bilan qui s’avère être plus que positif pour la décennie qui vient de s’écouler, et qui annonce un futur très prometteur pour Mandriva.

Mandriva celebrates its 10 years anniversary at the Eiffel Tower

Mandriva 10 years anniversary took place at the Eiffel Tower, symbolic place of Paris, where a large part of the Open Source community got together to celebrate Mandriva’s anniversary. 230 guests were presents. The evening started at 7 pm with François Bancilhon’s speech, the CEO of Mandriva. Then, several partners made a speech:

Mandriva Spring right on time!

We are delivering our Spring Distro on time, i.e., on the very same day we had planned 6 months ago. Thanks to the hard work of the developers in France, Brazil and elsewhere, thanks to the help of all the contributors, without whom none of this could happen, and thanks to Anne’s – how should I put it– gentle, but very firm stewardship. It’s a great distro and we’re proud of it.

Contributions to the Kernel

The Linux foundation recently published information on who contributes to the kernel development. Out of the 30 or so companies which contribute significantly to the kernel, there are only three distribution editors: Red Hat, Novell and Mandriva (and none other). We are happy and proud to do it. And please remember, when you buy Mandriva products or services, you help us contribute to the Linux kernel.

Manbo Labs

We reached the end of our first cycle of Manbo Labs. We set up this joint development effort with our friends from Turbolinux in the Fall of 2007. It was not easy at first since we had different cultures and approaches, but we learned how to work together. The first delivery of Manbo Labs now serves as the core of our Mandriva 2008 Spring distro. Turbolinux will base its next product on the same core. We are happy we did this together, it allowed us to invest more in the core technology. As announced, the core components are all available under a free and open source license
