Mandriva confirms its enterprise strategy with Pulse
Thursday May 04 2006
Enterprises and public sector organizations can benefit from the best of Linux thanks to the most internationalized open source publisher.
Paris, May 4th 2006 – Mandriva, the leading European Linux distributor, launches Pulse, the first open source (GPL) deployment software. Pulse is designed for any organization that wants to migrate their large and heterogeneous computing environment to Linux while taking full advantage of open source's flexibility.
Pulse, an effective and simple solution for enterprises
Pulse allows organizations with a multi-level network architecture easily to migrate all or most of their computing equipment to Linux, and to administrate it from then on. Aiding the growth of the organisation, Pulse optimizes enterprise computer management and helps lower the cost of management.
The main focus of Pulse is on deployment and IT management. It has been designed to handle network supervision tools and inventory systems, among others. Pulse is the first complete open source tool that allows the set up of a sophisticated administration policy through its advanced and highly customizable configuration features.
" We are very proud to present Pulse, the spearhead of our enterprise and public sector strategy. Our clients and the market in general needed a complete, open source deployment and software management solution: Pulse is the answer." declared François Bancilhon, Mandriva Chief Executive Officer.
Pulse helps reduce TCO (Total Cost of Ownership), by taking full advantage of Linux's flexibility in terms of software customization through the use of RPM packages. Pulse isn't limited to managing only one Linux distribution and works perfectly with non Mandriva solutions, such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (TM) or SUSE Linux (TM).
A service and open source-based approach
Mandriva remains loyal to its promise to respect the open source philosophy. The product is entirely under the GPL and free of licence fees. It will be sold as a project package including training, help through the deployment and set-up phase, maintenance and support. Mandriva will rely on two kinds of partnerships to promote Pulse: on one hand, partnerships with certified resellers, and on the the other hand, partnership with companies and open source communities offering complementary products (network supervision, inventory management, cluster management and so forth).
"Pulse shows our ambition to develop our enterprise and public sector market. This solution will at first be commercialized directly by Mandriva, but the aim is to rapidly set up a network of partners who will become major partners in distribution. The partners (SSII and SSLL) will be certified with Pulse by Mandriva. We believe they will bring added value to this market through advice, training and support. They will be trained, supported and guaranteed by Mandriva, who will provide the second and third levels of maintenance and support, among other things." commented François Bancilhon.
The fruit of partnership with Mandriva's clients
Developed by Mandriva, Pulse responds to a need that was never met before by the products offered in this area. In the tradition of collaboration typical of open source development, this innovative solution is the fruit of a partnership with several enterprises who had both diversified and converging needs regarding system administration. Mandriva brought to the development process its expertise in computing systems and Linux, its knowledge of installation technology and its talent as a Linux distributor. The clients, especially CEA and the Crédit Agricole group, brought their experience in managing large hardware and software installations.
Pulse relies on innovative technologies (the Ruby programming language, agent technology) and on Mandriva's R&D contribution (The installer, the management of package dependencies). Some of the future development of
Pulse will take place as a part of ENERGy, an ITEA-supervised research project in which Mandriva is a major partner.
