This is kinda funny... (Community Chat...)

Sat, 10/13/2007 - 09:00
I was on the Suse forums, because I am currently trying out OpenSuse. I am encountering many problems I did not have on Mandriva I said on one post "I guess I thought right, Mandriva is better than OpenSuse..." Some other guy said "give them a chance to answer might take a bit hang in there opensuse is alot better than mandriva"

Ya right, dream on........

Hello!

My 3D desktop does not work with MDV 2007.1/2008.
Any help?!

With PWP's driver: compiz is without window decoration, Metise ca not be started.

Mandriva 2008, suspend to ram does not work with fglrx (Laptops...)

Sat, 10/13/2007 - 09:00
Hi,
I have installed Mandriva 2008 on my Dell inspiron laptop D810 and suspend to ram does not work with ati proprietary drivers, fglrx-8.40.4, installed via dkms-fglrx. Except this, everything works really fine and I have a good 3D acceleration but suspend to ram **DOES NOT** work. It's very essential for a laptop.
With the open source ATI driver, suspend to ram works great but I don't have 3D acceleration anymore.... It's really a pitty because fglrx+suspend to ram were working fine with Mandriva 2007.1 !! I think that I am gonna give a try to Kubuntu, excepted if somebody has a miracle recipes to help me.
Thanks in advance.

Intel Driver (General Hardware...)

Sat, 10/13/2007 - 07:00
Hello. First of, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post. I'd also like to sorry about my English. I'm from Denmark. But I'm sure you can understand me.

Okay, so, my question is, can anyone help me find a [i:4b07cb4113]working[/i:4b07cb4113] driver for [u:4b07cb4113]Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset Family Intel(R) Graphics[/u:4b07cb4113] for 2008.0?

I've tried to google, but without luck. I fail. And the driver I found at Intel's homepage fails too. It is complaining about old kernel. Funny, I just updated to latest using [i:4b07cb4113]urpmi kernel-latest[/i:4b07cb4113] and still complains.

Why do I need it? Well. I want to run Second Life, but I get a "Window Creation Error."

Thanks,
Xuxiix.

Disk encryption and Mandriva 2008.0 (Community Chat...)

Sat, 10/13/2007 - 05:00
Hi.

Does mandriva 2008 have any tools available which would allow me to encrypt the entire hard drive on my laptop? If not, is there a third-party tool which would allow me to, rather easily, do so?
Thanks.

I was wondering what version of Mandriva (or Mandrake) was most liked. I'm not sure when Mandriva became Mandrake, so please excuse any errors I have.

compiz-window-decorator not loading (3D Desktop...)

Sat, 10/13/2007 - 01:00
Hi,
I just upgraded to 2008 from 2007 Spring, and it looks like something didn't take in the move from beryl to compiz-fusion. I've looked through these threads that seem closely related, but haven't been able to nail it down yet:

http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=66393
http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=71276
http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=69914

As with the above, no window decorator comes up. I'm on a Toshiba Tecra M4 with the nvidia GEForce 8800 with the proprietary nvidia driver.

When I open a terminal and type "compiz-window-decorator" I get this:
[code:1:5f1b7b6342]

(gtk-window-decorator:10618): Gdk-WARNING **: Using Cairo rendering requires the drawable argument to
have a specified colormap. All windows have a colormap,
however, pixmaps only have colormap by default if they
were created with a non-NULL window argument. Otherwise
a colormap must be set on them with gdk_drawable_set_colormap

(gtk-window-decorator:10618): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_cairo_create: assertion `GDK_IS_DRAWABLE (drawable)' failed
[/code:1:5f1b7b6342]

Here's my /etc/sysconfig/compositing-wm:

[code:1:5f1b7b6342]
COMPOSITING_WM_START=yes
COMPOSITING_WM_WINDOW_DECORATOR=/usr/bin/compiz-window-decorator
COMPOSITING_WM=compiz-fusion
[/code:1:5f1b7b6342]

And last but not least, here Xorg.0.log:

2008.0 glxgears missing Matlab 3D performance very bad (Next Mandriva Linux and C...)

Sat, 10/13/2007 - 01:00
I installed Mandriva 2008.0 PowerPack x86_64 on a Dell Inspiron 1720 with nVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT.
In 2007.1 glxgears was present.
Now it is not.
Can I install it?

I installed Matlab 2007b and ran "bench(5)". In 2007 I used to get 71 as benchmark, now I get only 33, because the 3D graph is very very slow.

The nVIDIA software was in both 2007.1 and 2008.0 version 100.14.19.

What happened with 2008.0 ???

Mandriva 2006 installation with M/B Intel DQ965GF? (General Hardware...)

Fri, 10/12/2007 - 21:00
Hi,
I am currently designing a fast measurement computer that will host a very fast counting card (FastComtec P7888). In order to run this card I have to get a fast M/B and processor. In addition I have to run LabView on this machine, this restricts me to Mandriva 2006 (MS Win is no option, Mandy 2007 is not supported by labview)
http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/35D2B5E483A001A18625716B005BE464?OpenDocument
Anyway as indicated on the Intel homepage, the DQ965GF motherboard / Q6700 processor should work with Mandriva 2006. I am just wandering, if anybody here has some experience while installing this system?

In addition I would like to get a SATA2 RAID HD (Western Digital) in order to have the fastest possible data rat onto the disk. Is this fully supported by 2.6.12-31, which I believe was the last kernel for which all other Mandriva related software is available?

Is there anything else I should be aware while getting all components? The counting card (PCI) needs two I/O address ranges and enabled DMA transfer, but I think this is only a M/B issue?!
Thanks for you help

setting PATH variable (Community Chat...)

Fri, 10/12/2007 - 19:00
Thanks for your interest in looking at this note.

I am operating PowerPack 2007 and am having difficulty setting the PATH variable. The command that I'm using in the bash shell is:
export PATH=/usr/local/boost_1_34_1:PATH

I have tried that as a user and as root with no apparent effect. After this command the shell behaves strangely. It won't recognize the env command or the su command again. If I open a new window the commands are recognized until I try to set the PATH again. Then the same problem occurs. I have reloaded the operating system and updated it with urpmi --auto-update but this does not change the problem. Has anyone else seen a similar problem or have an idea for a cure?

application icons (General Software Tips and...)

Fri, 10/12/2007 - 17:00
I have an application on my destop (script file) that executes the program but I can't get the icon for this application to link to this script file. (i.e. I want to have a desktop icon to click on and not a script file on the desktop. In which directory does the icons reside for most of the applications? I want to put this icon in there so that I can then link it to the executable script file on my desktop.
