No sound in Mandriva 2008 (Sound...)

Thu, 10/11/2007 - 19:00
Hi all,
I installed Mandriva 2008 Free KDE on my Dell Dimension 5000 desktop computer but i have no sound.

[code:1:0c54edac27]lspcidrake -v | grep -i audio
snd_intel8x0 : Intel Corporation|82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller [MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO] (vendor:8086 device:266e subv:1028 subd:0199)
[/code:1:0c54edac27]

In draksound snd_intel8x0 [ALSA] driver is choosed and sound is enabled in KDE control center.
I checked alsamixer settings but everything was ok, also installed alsaconf and setting up alsa did not work.

Any idea?

ATI Driver Crash After Logging Out (Graphics Cards...)

Thu, 10/11/2007 - 19:00
Hi,

I am using the Powerpack 2008.0 version on a Samsung R50 which has an ATI X300 GPU.

When ever I log out of GNOME the X server crashes and the error / re-configure screen is brought up. The same also happens when I do a Ctrl - Alt - Backspace.

The problem does not appear to occur with the X.org driver only with the vendor ATI 9500-X850 driver as it is known as in Mandriva.

The xorg.conf file is as follows:

Hey would someone please try this link and see if it downloads anything for you? It's stalling on me (you may think this a joke when you click the link, but I promise, I need to know).

Thanks so much.

What is the difference between the two and which one do I choose?

Tricky install - any ideas? (Community Chat...)

Thu, 10/11/2007 - 13:00
Hello,

I'd like to set up a torrent to help spread MDV 2008 on a spare box, but I am having trouble.

I have set up the CD/DVD to be the first device to boot, but my mobo somehow does not respect this. I suspect the DVD-RW (Toshiba/Samsung TS-552U) simply waits too long to tell the BIOS "please wait, I have discovered valid El Torito boot instructions!"

I looked in the BIOS for a "delay" feature, but did not find any. I think this is normally coded into the BIOS so you can use old (say, 340 MB) hard drives in modern computers. This could give the needed delay for the DVD-RW, but as I said, I don't see this feature in this BIOS.

The floppy controller chip has died, so I cannot start any install (even a Windows install) from floppy.

I do *_not_* have a Mandriva Flash (USB) stick.

Will I have to use BitTorrent on the Windows 98 partition to spread the torrent?

I have Mandrake 10, but I suspect the version of Python is too old to use BitTorrent, so I'd prefer to use Mandriva 2006 or 2007.1.

It has an 80 GB hard drive in it, so I've got lots of space (Windows OR Linux). If I need to copy files to a scratch partition, and use some weird boot process to get Mandriva on it, it will not be a problem.

Hardware: DFI AD-77 Infinity (VIA KT-400 and VT8235 bridge chips), Athlon 1800, 512 RAM (or more, I really don't remember), all running at STOCK timings. Video card is a PCI ATI 9200 (manufactured by ATI). Hard drive is a Samsung 80 GB.

I do need your ideas. Thanks in advance!

sound quality issue (Sound...)

Thu, 10/11/2007 - 13:00
Hi guys,

I use Mandriva 2008 free and I have a problem with the quality of the sound. I play a cd with Amarok or Kaffeine and the sound is ok for a few seconds and then it gets crappy for a few seconds and then it is ok and then again crappy and so on. I had a similar problem with Mandriva 2007.1 and I fixed it by playing with KMix. I tried the same stuff with 2008 but in vain. I mean I could improve the quality of the sound a bit but it is still faaaaaaar away from ok. I have an ATI sound card embedded in the motherboard (intel). The system detected it as ATI HDA. I think it is ok. It was detected the same way with 2007.1.
I've tried every single setting with KMix. Please help.

Thank you in advance,

Corneliu

Audio and TV Tuner (x86-64 Hardware...)

Thu, 10/11/2007 - 13:00
During install I did not see my TV Tuner been detected. Now I have a freezing problem. I think is a conflict with TV Tuner and Audio. The Computer freezes and I can not do anything once I log on.

Need help on this one. Does anybody has an idea on what to look?

PowerPack Questions (Community Chat...)

Thu, 10/11/2007 - 11:00
I'm relatively new to Mandriva Linux and had a few questions about the PowerPack subscription service.

Regarding PowerPack licensing, is it a per computer or per subscription model?

So for example, if I had two computers, could I install the PowerPack on both with one subscription or does that require two separate subscriptions?

Does the same apply to small business users? For example, an office with 3 computers?

Just want to make sure that I understand the licensing terms in comparison to the typical Windows/Mac single computer license.

Thanks in advance!

A few questions before cutting over... (Next Mandriva Linux and C...)

Thu, 10/11/2007 - 09:00
If anybody can answer some questions I have before cutting over from 2007.1 to 2008.0..thanks

1) How to do a checksum on the DVD? I tried this suggestion and it doesn't work:
df -k /mnt/cdrom
umount /mnt/cdrom
dd if=/dev/cdrom count=block_count bs=1024 | md5sum

2) Are all my e-mails located in the /home partition? and how to back them up. There naming convention does not let them be saved onto a USB or similar. I had this problem before.

New forum theme (Community Chat...)

Thu, 10/11/2007 - 09:00
We've had a new theme in place for the forums for a few days, now. It matches the new Club site theme.

However, if you were a registered member of the forum before the change, you won't see the new theme when you're logged into the forum because your theme setting is locked in your profile. You'll see the old one. You'll only see the new one if you visit the site without being logged in.

So, if you want to use the new theme, it's easy. Just go to your profile and change the theme setting to 'forum2008'. Hope everyone enjoys the new look!

Public Service Announcement: NOKEY errors with 2008 (Community Chat...)

Thu, 10/11/2007 - 07:00
This is for anyone getting NOKEY errors trying to install packages from the online repositories for Mandriva Linux 2008.

The problem was that the pubkey files, which contain the keys used to sign packages in each repository, were missing from the media_info directories in the 2008 tree, so when it was adding the repositories, Mandriva could not get the key for each repository. Since the repository seemed to have no key associated with it, but the packages were signed, when you tried to install any package, Mandriva would give you the NOKEY warning.

This has been fixed on our master mirror around two hours before this post. I have checked several mirrors and found that at the time of writing this post, a couple of mirrors have synced up with the fix already, but most have not.

Once all the mirrors sync up with the fix, the problem will not occur again for anyone adding repositories. However, if you have already set up your repositories, the problem will not be fixed automatically. You must remove your repositories using the repository configuration tool, which can be found in the Mandriva Control Center, or the urpmi.removemedia command line tool. You can then set the repositories up again (using the repository configuration tool, or urpmi.addmedia) and you should no longer see the errors.

I will post a follow-up message when my checks indicate that most mirrors are synced up with the fix.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience.

With the old club membership there was a listing of how many days you had left on your membership on the club web page. How do you tell now how many days you have left with the new PowerPack Subscription Service?

I understand I'll have 2 times what was left because of my Silver membership level to the club on the PowerPack Subscription, but can't find where to see how many days you are showing I have left.
