Thursday March 28 2002

Altadena - March 27 2002 - MandrakeSoft today announced that the new version of the premier Office Suite for Linux, StarOffice 6.0, is immediately available as a download for Mandrake Linux Club Members. As part of its relationship with Sun, MandrakeSoft has been selected to distribute StarOffice 6.0. MandrakeSoft is offering the download service to MandrakeClub "Silver" members (and above). To provide Mandrake Club members the opportunity to reach Silver status, MandrakeSoft has set up a simple upgrade procedure.

Fully compatible with most Microsoft Office documents and available in all the major languages including French, German, Spanish, English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Swedish and Italian, Sun's StarOffice 6.0 supports 10 languages total.

Sun's StarOffice 6.0 for Linux provides a unique opportunity to help move new users to Linux. This new release confirms Linux as a stable, efficient and affordable replacement for Windows and MacOS in the enterprise, as well as for individuals.

StarOffice 6.0 is comprised of five major components. StarOffice Writer is a professional word processor; StarOffice Calc is a spreadsheet application; StarOffice Impress is a multimedia presentation tool; StarOffice Draw is a 3D graphics and special effects designer; StarOffice Adabas DB is a user-friendly database.

The new features include a new XML-based document format that results in dramatically reduced file sizes (compared to StarOffice 5.2), improved file filters and support for OLE objects that provide excellent compatibility with Microsoft Office documents, new font rendering, an improved user interface that makes StarOffice 6.0 more intuitive and friendly than ever, better system integration with other applications that allows, for instance, the ability to send office documents with an email client directly from StarOffice, and more!

"StarOffice software enables users within a multi-platform environment to conduct business seamlessly," said Mike Rogers, vice president and general manager of desktop and office productivity, Sun Microsystems. "We are pleased to be working with MandrakeSoft to deliver value to its customers."

Jacques Le Marois, CEO and Co-Founder of MandrakeSoft, adds: "StarOffice 6.0 is a powerful and low-cost office alternative that makes Linux much more attractive to a wider audience of people. I'm very happy that Mandrake Linux users can be the first Linux users to benefit from this new release."

StarOffice 6.0 is supported under the following Mandrake Linux versions (x86 only): Mandrake Linux 8.0, Mandrake Linux 8.1 and Mandrake Linux 8.2.
