Thanks for including IcedTea in 2008 (Community Chat...)

sam, 10/13/2007 - 19:00
I noticed that there was an update for java to version 1.6_02 to 1.6_03 at Sun's site.. I upgraded and Firefox kept crashing on start-up.. Guess 2008 didn't like the new java..So I installed the Iced Tea version and it works great.

2008 x86_64 installation hangs after licence screen (Laptops...)

sam, 10/13/2007 - 19:00
Anybody else out there with an installation problem? I cannot get the 64bit version to install on my Acer Ferrari4000. The installation hangs and the hard disk works in overtime. Maybe I should not be so stupid as to want to move with the times. Gone back to 2007.1 which gave me no grief.

2008.0 Update Problem (Community Chat...)

sam, 10/13/2007 - 17:00
I have installed 2008.0 and used easyurpmi to add repositories. I checked for updates which plf produced several. The updates required dependencies and asked me to put the dvd called "Mandriva Linux - 2008.0 (Powerpack) - Installer" in my dvdrom. I put the installation dvd in but it spat it out. I checked the name of the volume I had produced and it is called "2008-Powerpack-i586-DVD". I tried creating a volume with the requested name but it is too long. Help!!
I am non-technical so I would need walking through any possible solution.

Many thanks.

E-mu 1616 pci is stopping mandriva 2008 from starting (Sound...)

sam, 10/13/2007 - 17:00
As I said in the subject the mandriva 2008 wont start or install when I have the e-mu 1616 card installed. I tried several times to install mandriva 2008, but no luck... I then started to pull out things from my machine... and found out that its the emu card that is stopping the system...

Could this have something to do with the alsa 1.0.14 or 1.0.15 to do?

I installed the madriva 2008 without the sound card, and everything went smooth... Is there something I can do to make it work with e-mu?

I know that alsa 1.0.15 driver has support for e-mu...

Fixes and improvements that are required in 2008 (Community Chat...)

sam, 10/13/2007 - 15:00
Okay
Mandriva 2008 is great and works out of the box.
Lots of fixes and so much more stable.

But let's start to tally up issues, improvements and fixes we like to see.

Laptop:

1) Synaptic Touchpad...still no GUI Applet to adjust it's settings.
I hate tapping and checked for a GUI applet on the DVD..nothing there. This then brought me back to modifying "xorg.conf" well I screwed it up which left me with no GUI on re-boot. So I had to use "vi" as root to restore it.
Finally edit it correctly but tap is still working.
Hardly what an Ex-Window user could do.

2) On start up when booting I see that Laptop mode is installed but not activated.

3) The wireless and the Mandriva Online applet crashed once for no reason.

4) Isn't it CTRL + F1 to bring up the KMenu? Well it stopped working as well.

So what other issues and improvements are required?

2008 mirrors and updates (Community Chat...)

sam, 10/13/2007 - 15:00
i have 2008 official installed on one of my partitions (other running cooker) and each day i have done a urpmi --auto-update.

each repository is claimed as being "up to date" and no upgrades are found.

i just wanted to check that there have not been any updates so far? or is my database screwed?

i have main, main updates, contrib, contrib updates, non-free and non-free updates (all from the official 2008 tree) repositories added

The list of recent forum posts on start.mandriva.com doesn't seem to have updated for a couple of days. Linkage to the new forum maybe?

Wireless card installed but cannot see any wireless networks (Laptops...)

sam, 10/13/2007 - 15:00
Acer Aspire 3003 WLCi Laptop
Mandriva Linux 2008 One
Broadcom 4318 wireless driver

I just reinstalled Mandriva 2008, and was able to configure my wireless driver. But, when I look at Network Center and expand my eth0 (wireless) there are no recognized networks. I know mine is up because I am directly connected at the moment and my son is using our desktop over the wireless. When I installed the driver it said the network was: "Unlisted - edit manually". I'm not that great at networking configurations. Should this have been detected upon setup of the driver? Does this mean the driver I have is not fully functional?

Thanks
Mike

The mirror finder seems to be broken. (Requests and Mandriva Ser...)

sam, 10/13/2007 - 15:00
The club's mirror finder seems to be broken. For example, if I go to Mirror Finder, then select 2007 version, "main.updates" resource type, and France, United States, or All Countries, instead of finding the mirrors, it returns the following Java error:

java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException: String index out of range: -1

That looks like a coding bug. Could somebody please get it fixed?

Thanks.

Cannot install Brother printer in Mandriva 2008 One (Printers and Scanners...)

sam, 10/13/2007 - 15:00
I have a problem installing my Brother MFC420CN multifunction unit in Mandy 2008 One...I installed the driver ok, but when I attempted to install the cupswrapper driver, I got this:

[root@localhost Desktop]# rpm -ihv --nodeps cupswrapperMFC420CN-1.0.0-1.i386.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
1:cupswrapperMFC420CN ########################################### [100%]
Bad : modifier in $ (/).
error: %post(cupswrapperMFC420CN-1.0.0-1.i386) scriptlet failed, exit status 1...

The script did not complete, therefore I could not install my printer...I worked perfectly in 2007.1....Any idea where this error comes from?

Thanks for any help....

sam, 10/13/2007 - 15:00
The page for 2007.0 updates (security advisories) is stale. As of Oct. 12, it is showing the latest advisory is dated Oct. 4. However, mirrors are showing updated packages for mkisofs, cdrecord-*, and *vorbis* as of Oct. 8 and Oct. 10. Can somebody please wake up whoever is supposed to update the updates/advisories page?

Changing Boot Splash, Start-Up Image, and Log-in Screen (General Software Tips and...)

sam, 10/13/2007 - 15:00
I just installed Mandriva 2008 and I really like it, but don't like the DNA theme.

Does anyone know of a good web site that provides instructions on how to change the boot splash, the start-up image, and the log-in screen image to something else?

If anyone knows of any good sites that offer Mandriva themed log-in themes, that would be helpful. I didn't find any on Gnome-look.

Thanks.

Bluetooth problems (General Hardware...)

sam, 10/13/2007 - 15:00
Hi.
I have mandriva 2008 free and 2008 one versions checked.
Bt adapter.
my phone with bt support.

After starting kbluetooth i configure it for discoverable mode and trying find it via phone - nothing.

With my 2007 in errata was tip:
hciconfig hci0 piscan for enabling discoverable mode
It's works in 2007.
But for 2008 it useless.

I took livecd 2007 one version and boot from it.
Then starts kbluetooth and execute in term: hciconfig hci0 piscan
Ofcource phone find my computer fine.

So i suppose problem somewhere in 2008.

How can we make computer discoverable in 2008?

P.S. in 2008 one version while starting with plugged bt adapter kbluetooth cannot start and talk about sdpd server - as temporary solution just open something like konsole and type from root: sdpd and start kbluetooth again.

PowerPack Subscription Question (Community Chat...)

sam, 10/13/2007 - 13:00
I just purchased a PowerPack subscription and logged into the Club so that I could download it.

Unfortunately, I don't see a 2008 CD set download.

I see a set for 2007.1 but only see the DVD for 2008.

The box I'm going to install on doesn't have a DVD burner, only a CD burner.

Where might I find the CDs?

Thanks.

Setting up an HP 6310 all in one wireless network printer. (Printers and Scanners...)

sam, 10/13/2007 - 11:00
Hi, I am new to Mandriva.....saw the post in the pclos forum about the new mandriva 8 and decided to give it a go. It has a nice feel, sort of familiar and yet not.

Anyway,I am struggling a bit. A lot actually. I want to install my new HP officejet as a network printer using the HP wireless upgrade kit. I have been trying now for maybe 6 hours, what with searching forums etc. (and actuallly searching for the mandriva forum - It was some time before I clicked on mandriva club and found it).

I have had the printer and scanner working well in pclos using the usb cable, but that is as far as ive got. In mandriva, I get the error msg "Could not install the Cups printing system!"

I cant seem to find cups in the package list. In fact, the software management tool does not seem to update anything and no packages other than those that are installed are shown. Can't find cups anywhere. Is it me being dense? This sort of thing seems so easy in pclos, so I thought mandriva can't be that different can it?

I dont mean to be critical, as it is probably me at fault, so please dont take my comments the wrong way. I would really like to give mandriva a good trial, but could use some guidance. Thanks,
Mike
