No SCSI support in Mandriva 2008/new Linux kernel? (General Hardware...)
as a happy user of spring 2007, i was surprised to find the my scsi array is not recognized (LSI Megaraid 320-2E, six drive raid0, supermicro server dual opteron board). i then tried the 7.10 Ubuntu RC, and again, the same results. i haven't found any reference to this issue online, so if anyone has a clue to pass on, please do
Via Epia EX10000EG Has No Driver? (Sound...)
I installed 2008 Powerpack on my Via Epia EX10000EG motherboard. I must say the 2008 has better support than any other Linux with the graphics driver. But when I install it asks me if I want another sound driver. It says there's a Via HD sound driver, but when I hit the drop down choice, there only Intel and unkown. Hmmmm. I get no sound at all. Its that darned CX700M2 chip again.

I'm UPGRADING 2007.1 to 2008 at the moment. This on the laptop it took me 3 weeks to get 2007.1 installed on appropriately.
Brave and confident, or stupid? I think stupid.
It's hairy-hairy edge bottom end machine for running any Linux, except Slax and Puppy. Head below the water breathing through a straw, actually.
Needless to say it's a belabored process. I started it and left for 3 hours, only to return to find probably 1/13400 of a second after I walked away it dutifully informed me it couldn't read a file on the disk. (good iso, good burn; your bad)
Dude...
Dude, what are you smoking over there?
Of course the thing was NOT installing for three hours, waiting for input. Why haven't you put the simple option of "auto skip" into the menu?!
Your argument cannot be "your system may be broken if critical things are auto-skipped," without at least a few of us peeing our pants in laughter.
I thoroughly expect this "upgrade" to bee an utterly useless gelatinous mass when this is said and done. (I just peeked; 23 hours 40 minutes from now...)
(ooo, I lied; 23:54)
Come on, how hard can it be to A) auto skip these errors and B) print the skip list on the summary page.
Why not let us determine for ourselves whether it's worth rebooting? "So if 'kernel blah blah blah' didn't load is that OK?" You'll find out no matter who or what.
I am doing this "upgrade" for the decathlon ultimate survivor Pluto challenge it is. If you "upgrade" this machine you deserve the Nobel, Oscar, Hugo and every other recognition that puts cash and/or gold in all your pockets.
I am past ready to cut lost time now and restart with a destructive install. It's been "23:50" for around 20 minutes, with 0 files being installed. HD light off the whole time.
Oh well, no Nobel this time.
I need better equipment. Ironically, I always have, since my P-150 with 64MB RAM glued on to the motherboard. (Mandrake 7.0 in the box)
Yep. This "upgrade" is dead. Would have gotten here a lot earlier, or perhaps... just perhaps NOT gotten here, i.e. failed, if I could have said "auto skip."
The more cache, buffers, tasks and threads you can wipe and forget for the duration (of the install) the better, right?
Let's hear ya cheer!!!

Mandriva 2008 One CD will not boot live CD (Laptops...)
I have an HP TC4200 Tablet PC, with an external USB CD/DVDROM. It has no internal drive.
When I boot from the live CD, I can see the splash screen, and the kernel proceeds to boot, then crashes with a series of messages:
mount: mounting lib on /live/lib failed
rmdir: 'lib': Directory not empty
mount: mounting linuxrc on /live/linuxrc failed
rmdir: 'linuxrc' : Not a directory
mount: mounting live on /live/live failed
rmdir: 'live' : Directory not empty
...
ERROR: /bin/sh exited abnormally with value 1 ! (pid 1176)
mount: error 2 mounting none flags (null)
well, retrying without the option flags
...
Cannot run '/etc/init.d/rcS' : No such file or directory
Please press Enter to activate this console.
I left out some info there with the ellipsis because I didn't fee like typing a screenful...but the errors were the same...different directories.
I have tried booting with noapic nolapic acpi=off but to the same results.
I have an HP TC4400 at work, and it gives the same results. This very same disk boots up a new Dell desktop workstation just fine, so the problem is not with the media.
Any ideas here? I'm at a loss.

2008.0 and VMWare Workstation: bad experienc (Next Mandriva Linux and C...)
I installed Mandriva 2008.0 PowerPack x86_64 on my Dell Inspiron 1720 notebook.
I installed VMWare Workstation VMware-workstation-6.0.1-55017.x86_64.rpm.
I used a Windows Vista virtual machine that was created on Mandriva 2007.1 which worked very well: network access and sound both ok. Although sound only worked when no other program (like Amarok e.g.) was using /dev/dsp.
Now with 2008.0 I have no network access at all and no sound at all. I always get "Failed to open sound device /dev/dsp Device or resource busy" even when no other application is using /dev/dsp.
I have setup bridged network vmnet0 with my wireless eth1, but don't get network access. I have no idea what is wrong here.
When starting the guest Vista, I get the message "The host high-resolution timer device (/dev/rtc) cannot be set up to deliver interrupts (Invalid argument). Certain versions of the Linux kernel do not support this feature. Without the device, the guest operating system can fail to keep time correctly. To avoid this problem, see http://www.vmware.com/info?id=34."
My 2008.0 experience is bad. I am thinking of switching back to 2007.1

no boot CD iso for 2008? (Next Mandriva Linux and C...)
I've been unable to find an iso image to give a CD boot disk (only) for installing 2008 x86.
(context: have downloaded the i586 pwp DVD iso. Have installed the iso on a small partition on the target laptop, but need the boot CD to run the install. (The DVD reader in the Dell Latitude C800 laptop seems unable to read DVD RW disks)
Have looked all over distrib-coffee via the club HTTP link without finding a boot CD image. Is there one, or is there another way of initiating the install from the target (now 2007.1) partition?

Forum theme (Community Chat...)
With MDV 2008 the colors of the forum are changed. Titles are yellow and the body text is grey. I find it difficult to to read now. I prefer the old colors with blue titles and good black letters. These are much easier for me to read. My eyes are not what they were.
Could I change the theme somehow for me alone so that it is easier for me to read this forum?

Where do those of us who supposedly "converted" how much time we have remaining on out subscription? Seeing as I just forked out 132 USD I would like to know that the money didn't go into a black hole. The "Club" page doesn't have the "days left" anymore after you log in.

Editing 2008 initrd (Community Chat...)
Hi,
I was wondering if someone could help me with editing the Mandriva One 2008 initrd?
I know this might sound a bit odd but the only thing I need to change is the volume id in the linuxrc script.
I have actually managed to do this already and make the whole thing boot successfully by mounting the decompressed initrd, editing the script and re-compressing it again.
However, by doing this I have managed to break the splash screen so now I only get the console view during boot.
I will agree that this is purely cosmetic but if I'm going to do this I might as well do it properly and learn something in the process.
Thanks in advance

Merci.

Hi evryone,
i just have done an install of mandriva 2008 free edition, and i'm trying to use the nvidia drivers for a geforce 7600 (on a new notebook)...
First of all i had a look on the rpm packages in ccm, there was no entry corresponding to "nvidia". Then i installed "dkms-nvidia-current" and "x11-driver-video-nvidia-current" packages from an external server. After a reboot there were no changes, the color depth is still bad and there is no 3D acceleration anymore.
Have you got any suggests ?
Thanks a lot.
Jk.

Hi! I was looking forward to enjoying my DVD's without having to resort to libdvdcss and VLC. But it seems that the LinDVD player is just crap. It just makes my drive make funny noises and then after a while, I have to force-quit it.
