SATA RAID Monitoring? (mdk 2008.0) (General Hardware...)
I have an Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe w/ a Nvidia nForce 570 SLI MCP onboard RAID controller. I setup the RAID controller in the RAID BIOS for RAID1 (w/ 2 - 149G SATA Drives) and installed 2008.0.
Installation recognized the RAID1 as 1 drive and installation was awesome!!!!!!!!!!
My problem is how do I know when the array is degraded without having to reboot and watch the RAID Controller BIOS message? Of coarse there appears to be a Windoz program called MediaShield that monitors the array. But I'm not seeing anything about a monitoring program (like mdadm for linux software raid) for SATA RAID in linux.
I know I could turn off the onboard SATA RAID, use mdadm and I'd be done with it but I'm assuming there is a performance hit for using software raid instead of taking advantage of the onboard RAID controller.
NOT monitoring is NOT an option of coarse since NOT knowing my array is degraded defeats the purpose of having a RAID1 to safeguard my system.
Any thought, help or directions to where I can get help would be greatly appreciated.

ATI AIW 8500 R200 (Graphics Cards...)
The R200 box (ATI 8500AIW).
I found to have the same problem with all versions of Mandriva linux and the The R200 (ATI 8500AIW) video card as another user. The problem is the following (I edited his post just a bit to describes mine as well) :
The R200 with any version of Mandriva Linux (9.1-2008.0) in my case locks up going into X about 80% of the time. If you do get into X it works fine, including 3D acceleration. When it locks up going into X it locks HARD. No keyboard, No mouse, either a black screen or "cable disconnected" display. As these you have to crash them with the power button when they lock. If you simply power them back up, you will NOT get into X. It will hard lock. You have to boot into safe mode, init 3, login, then "halt", then if you re-power it up you will "probably" get into X. If you do the above process and type "reboot", you will "probably not" get into X. I've tried both the Automatically start X option , and not. Without using the Display manager, KDE and Gnome will often work, but if you choose icewm-light, it will work right, and exit correctly, but then if you startx GNOME or startx KDE after being in icewm-light it will hard lock. If you use the DM (start X automatically) it will usually hard lock on an exit, or restarting X.
With the driver set to [b:d3493c7946]vesa[/b:d3493c7946], the problem goes away. Trouble is, vesa sucks.
I have to repeat that the ATI driver works fine, when you can get it start. The problem seems to be related to some kind of lock file that gets created, that doesn't or can't be released. I used the default security settings. Very frustrating.
Any help will be appreciated,
Thanks

Good & bad (Community Chat...)
(this was posted to the wiki earlier, but I have revised it since then)
------------------------------
The Good:
* I like the new look! This version is really very pretty.
* It feels very snappy
* LinDVD is back! I don't use ity very much myself, but I'm sure there will be many others that do. LinDVD is a quite good DVD player.
The Bad:
There are a few rather bad things as well:
* The mcc is not wholly translated (I use Swedish, and about half the menu items are still in English)
* The K-menu is still very cluttered. The absence of a "System" level in the menu makes you look everywhere. "Tools" is not a very intuitive top level for this cathegory (but, of course, I' ve mentioned this before) (and it might also be a matter of taste)
* "Totem" is a strange default choice for video player if you're a KDE user like me.
The Ugly:
* "Flash" and "Real player" weren't installed by default on my laptop.
* NFS doesn't work properly on one of my desktops.
On my laptop, NFS works perfectly, but the desktop still doesn't work after (1) reinstallation of nfs-utils and (2) a new OS installation from scratch.
I've also tried several reboots of all boxes in the network, in different orders.
Since NFS worked perfectly on the same box in 2007.1, I assume that some parameter settings has gone wrong during installation or 2008.0. But what??
Oh the whole, though, I think I'm gonna like it - though this one would surely need a "2008.01" (the translations!)
The Spring edition, if it turns out to be as improved as 2007.1 was compared to 2007.0, might well be the best Linux desktop distro ever!

I looked at Mandriva Club and the pages have also been changed.
I like the new look, but after looking around, I wanted to go here at the Forum.

linksys WRT150n, anyone used one? (General Hardware...)
Hey!
I just saw the Linksys WRT150N at BB for $99 and on pricewatch for MUCH less.
I need to update my networking hardware and I'd like to go N (yeah yeah I know its not a standard yet) but i have to wonder why thee is almost a $50-$75 difference between this and their original N series WRT300N.
now i'll admit the 300N LOOKS a whole lot more impressive....

HTTP/FTP download page error (Community Chat...)
Hi,
When I login (I am a silver member) and use the download > HTTP/FTP link I get the following message
You are not allowed to view this document or perform this action.
Is there a problem with the HTTP downloads, or is it just with me?
I am trying to download at work (can't do torrents) because it is much faster here than at home - so I can install ASAP - then seed the iso at home.

Chris.

Software installation error (Community Chat...)
I am new to Mandriva. I have installed the 2008 relase and all seems to work, but I cannot install any software. Each time I try to install something it keeps telling me that there is a non-valid key. Am I missing something? I tried to change the repository, but it's simply not working.
If I'm running 2008 from cooker... do I re-install with 2008 (Next Mandriva Linux and C...)
Guys,
My box is currently running 2008 with the cooker repos (and has been for quite some time now).
Should I be upgrading/downgrading to 2008 release, or do I leave things where they are?
Can I safely remove cooker and use the club repo's for updates from here?
Ta
Peter.

Cedega (Community Chat...)
Hi,
I've just installed 2008 powerpack. It says that Cedega is included as part of the powerpack package, however I can't find it anywhere. Is there a way of working out if it's on the system, and if not is there a way of adding it to the system from the DVD or do I have to do a reinstall?
Regards
Steve

Radeon:External laptop monitor refresh rate problem [solved] (General Hardware Tips and...)
Here's a great tutorial on using the mergefb option in xorg to handle dual displays: http://ozlabs.org/~jk/docs/mergefb/
I have an external monitor hooked to my laptop via the VGA port, and I'd been struggling to get X to use anything other than a horrible 60 Hz to drive it.
Once I followed the steps on the linked page, it just worked fine at a "lovely" 85 Hz - no flicker - no more headaches !!!
Because I only wanted the same resolution on the lcd and the monitor, and I wasn't interested in scrolling around multiple desktops, I changed the config from the linked page a little bit - and here's what works like a charm for me now:
The particular trick is duplicating your [b:ce7b8a6751]Device[/b:ce7b8a6751] section with the same BusID in both sections (you can get the ID from lspci), and setting up 2 monitor sections - 1 for lcd, 1 for monitor.
As you'll see, in MetaModes I've forced both displays to 1024x768 - but you don't have to do that - it was just the solution to my refresh rate problem.

New website & pricing (Community Chat...)
I have said for years that the club was overpriced, and I know others have said that the main website was confusing (and I agreed).
So, congratulations on the new website and pricing changes! The PowerPack+ (now called PowerPack) is now [i:bfdb6a4d54]very[/i:bfdb6a4d54] reasonably priced, and the Subscription option is more than half the cost of the old Silver membership level. In addition, the new website is beautiful!
However, there are one or two problems I have noticed:
[list:bfdb6a4d54][*:bfdb6a4d54]At the bottom left hand side of the front page, clicking "Mandriva Linux 2008" under "Download" doesn't do anything.
[*:bfdb6a4d54]The PowerPack subscription page in the store still refers to the club, and is very confusing as a result.
[*:bfdb6a4d54]The manuals for 2008.0 aren't up yet (but it's good they are now accessible to all).
[*:bfdb6a4d54]A suggestion rather than a problem: There is no mention of the PowerPack subscription on the front page or the PowerPack product page in the store. Subscribing is now a very good deal (basically two versions of the PowerPack for the price of one) so it should be mentioned somewhere.[/list:u:bfdb6a4d54]

Seeding (Community Chat...)
It took me about two hours to download the 2008 pwp DVD via ktorrent. I have been seeding for almost 7 hours and have only had 319 MB uploaded. My upload speed is unlimited. My 6881 to 6889 ports are open. I have 2 leechers. Is there something I can do to increase upload or do I just wait for more activity? I would like to help others download.
