fglrx 8.42.3 released, lols of improvements including AIGLX! (Community Chat...)
Hi,
FGLRX 8.42.3 has been released, and it contains many improvements & bugfixes, such as HUGE 3D performance improvements, video playing problems gone, and AIGLX support, which means XGL is no longer needed
Here is a link to more info:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=887&num=1
and two mirrors for download:
https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-8.42.3-x86.x86_64.run
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-8.42.3-x86.x86_64.run
I tried to install it, by removing all fglrx packages from the system using rpmdrake, and using dkms remove -m fglrx -v 8.40.4 --all to remove the DKMS module.
Then I executed the installer as root, followed the steps through the GUI installer and rebooted.
Although I get a GUI, glxgears is stuttery and fglrxinfo returns Mesa.
So I'm asking, is there anyone who knows how to get fglrx working? It'd be even better if this version was added to backport repos.
Thanks.

3D effect doesn't work with my nVIDIA 6200TC card (3D Desktop...)
Hello,
Yesterday I installed mandriva 2008 and compiz-fusion doesn't work.
It is written that my system does not support 3d effect.
But in the past I run beryl on ubuntu, and I read that is possible to run compiz-fusion with this card.
How do I get compiz-fusion to work?
Thanks!

7900GTS GPU Fan "hammering" (Graphics Cards...)
Has anyone noticed any problem with their GPU fan being "hammered" (coming on and going off quite frequently)? I've been noticing this little issue the last few days, and am not sure what to think of it.
I'm using standard nvidia-current driver that came with Mandriva 2008, and while I could go check Nvidia's site, and download/install the latest driver they have by hand, I'd prefer not to, if I don't have to.

missing /dev/dsp and dev/snd (Sound...)
I've some troubles when i'm trying to install freevo on my mandriva 2008. It seems that mplayer just skips through all the music files without playing them. Mplayer works fine with command line.
I think it might have to do with the missing /dev/dsp, but being a newbie, i am not sure at all....
How do I add the /dev/dsp, or what could I feed my freevo config file with instead?
any helps is appreciated.

tuxmachines.org poll: Best recent release (Community Chat...)
[color=darkblue:3b00702ecb]Congratulations to the Mandriva team for a superb 2008.0 release!
There's a poll of recent releases on http://www.tuxmachines.org/. Ubuntu is leading Mandriva by 37% to 33% at the moment - a bit ironic considering the number of problems that are being posted on the Ubuntu forums!
Of course, polls like this are [i:3b00702ecb]meaningless[/i:3b00702ecb], but you might want to keep an eye on this poll all the same. [/color:3b00702ecb]

Getting Belkin WirelessG USB network adapter to run in 2007s (General Hardware...)
I am pretty much a Mandriva newbie. Could anyone tell me how to get a Belkin WirelessG USB network adapter (802.11g-125 HSM) to work with Mandriva 2007 Spring? I have tried the wireless installation options, but it does not seem to even "see" the hardware.
Scale minimized windows and the Grouping option (3D Desktop...)
Hello,
when I touch the upper right corner of the screen it only scale windows that are not minimized to tray and viewed on other desktops but I would like to scale all open windows
the second thing I would like to have is the grouping option (I am not sure of the name but it was available on mepis) which groups more than one window together and you can switch between them using thumbnails that appear when you touch the titlebar of the window
Thank you

Problem with sound recording (Sound...)
I'm running on mandriva 2007.1, and an MSI P4M900M2 mother board. Now all these works on windows.
The problem that I have is when I'm using skype. I always get this problem regarding my sound recording. What happens is that I can hear my voice, so meaning is able to take my voice from the mic, but not recording it . When I do a test call on skype, it says that there is a problem on my sound input, but then I can always here my voice through the speakers.
I don't have problems with sound, except for this.
Is there a way to fix this ? does this mean I lack something?
Please send me suggestion on how I can go about fixing this problem.

hello mandriva! (Community Chat...)
Hello, long time Linux user first time full mandriva user!
I have tried mandriva a few times in my past here and there but this might be my first permanent stay.
Right now I am evaluating mandriva for a week or so but if I feel all is satisfactory I might stick around this time
