Mandriva 2008 - No USB Devices ! USB not activated ? (General Hardware...)

dim, 10/21/2007 - 17:00
G'day everyone !

This post is also in the french forum http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=72889

After few month with ubuntu and because of few graphic resolution problems and and brand new 250Go hard drive, i've installed Mandriva 2008 on my Packard Bell EasyNote R1948.

Perfect ! No more problems with the resolution (1280*800), the "acpi" power management is working and the wifi connection is finally ok.

But .... I can't use any USB device.

A "lsusb" command print :

[code:1:ea4478975e][root@localhost ~]# lsusb
Unknown line at line 2389
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
[/code:1:ea4478975e]

I've been reported that even with the "unknown line" message it could work.

With my old hard driev where ubuntu still installed, lsusb print, as normal, the device IDs.

Thanks fro your help.

cant find /etc/lilo.conf (Community Chat...)

dim, 10/21/2007 - 16:00
I'm trying to compile the latest version of the linux kernel from source. The compilation went smoothly but I couldn't find lilo.conf or grub.conf. I'm using a 2.6.17-13mdvlegacy kernel. Both lilo and grub seem to be installed. Any help would be appreciated.

mount cdrom troubles (General Hardware...)

dim, 10/21/2007 - 16:00
Hi guys,

I have this Acer laptop that can't mount certain types of CDs. On the same machine I tried Windows and Ubuntu and they could not mount any type of CD at all. The only one that could actually mount data CDs was Mandriva One 2008. But Mandriva can't mount music CDs and DVDs. I went to the konsole and tried to mount with:
[code:1:e8645324e9][root@localhost /]# mount /dev/hdc -t iso9660 -r /media/cdrom
mount: No medium found
[root@localhost /]#[/code:1:e8645324e9]
but the music CD (or DVD) is already inserted. On the other hand I never had any trouble with the data CDs. They mount automatically but just for testing I unmounted them and then I used the same command to mount the data CD and it mounted just fine.
Do you guys have any suggestion?

Thank you in advance,

Corneliu

IDE drives failing to initiate under 2008.0 (General Hardware...)

dim, 10/21/2007 - 15:00
I am in the process of upgrading my home system from 2007.0 to 2008.0. I am noticing that my boot drives, which are a RAID pair of Seagate IDE drives connected to an onboard Intel ICH5 sata controller (Abit IS7 MB) are failing under kernel-desktop-2.6.22.9-1mdv-1-1mdv2008.0 with the error message "failed to set xfermode (err_msg = 0x40)" using the ata_piix kernel module. I am extremely suspicious that this is an ata_piix bug, since the very same type of problem has been seen before on multiple distributions with multiple kernel versions related to problems with ata_piix and libata. This system continues to work fine with kernel kernel-source-2.6.17.11mdv-1-1mdv2007.0. I have already submitted a bugzilla report. This bug would cause my system to simply not boot if I had been doing a fresh install. - George

cmi8788 + 2008 = no joy (Sound...)

dim, 10/21/2007 - 15:00
while i had my auzentech x-meridian (cmedia "oxygen" 8788 chip) working, albeit w/ the OSS driver, in spring 07, i am having no luck in 08. as usual, alsa is a no go (my onboard ac97 isn't even showing up...). has anyone had luck in 08 using the cmi8788 chip equipped cards? i must say this release is a beaut, but alas, i need audio. the card shows up in hardware config, but has "module:unknown', and "alternative drivers: unknown" under the driver heading.

Mandriva 2008.0 + k3b problem (Community Chat...)

dim, 10/21/2007 - 14:00
I can not burn any dvd with mandriva 2008.0 and K3b 1.0.3.The writing is going with low speed and at the end when it is time to finish k3b freezes with 100% cpu usage. The same happens if i press cancel during the burning. With mandriva 2007 & 2007.1 i have no problem. Also i tried it as root, same result,i tried on-the-fly and with image creation, same result.Anyone has the same problem ?When i run k3b from console i get the following messages

Wifi Keeps Disconnecting and Re-Connecting (Laptops...)

dim, 10/21/2007 - 14:00
I am running 2008 powerpack on an Acer Aspire 5100 with an Atheros 5001X+ wireless card. I have wireless setup with the Madwifi 0.9.3.2 driver and it works ok except for 2 things. The first is the connection will just all of a sudden drop and then reconnect itself a few seconds after. This happens at different intervals. It could work fine for hours before it does this or sometimes it will happen several times in a 10 minute period. A lot of the time the system is sitting idle with no activity when this happens.

The second issue is the signal strength. I can sit right next to the router and it will show a signal of only 63%. I can walk outside and at a much greater distance the signal will only drop to 52-55%.

I have 2 routers. The main router is a Sonicwall TZ150W and the other is a Dlink DGL-4300 running in bridge mode. I have had this setup for a couple years and has always worked great and still works great with Windows and OSX (I also have a Macbook). Any help would be appreciated.

1. What OS is it? I know its Mandriva, but '08, '07.1?
2. Is there any other way to do it? If I already have an 8 gigabyte drive, can I [i:bc274bd258]install[/i:bc274bd258] Mandriva '08 on it?

Compatible Wireless Adapters? (General Hardware...)

dim, 10/21/2007 - 07:00
Well, my wireless Intel3945 problem seems to have not been fixed moving from 2007.1 to 2008.0, in fact, the issue has regressed. I can't even use the wireless card with 2008 whereas before (with 2007.1) the card functioned but gave poor performance. With 2008 I can see my wireless network (with week signal, even sitting right next to my wireless router) but I cannot connect AT ALL. I have never had so much problem with a wireless card, and what is more disheartening, Intel makes Linux drivers for the card! You'd think it would function wonderfully! Fact is, the card does function wonderfully with other distros, but I LOVE MANDRIVA. Searching the forum reveals others are having a hard time with this particular chipset as well. I just don't get it. . . sigh. The particular laptop in question is running openSUSE 10.3 at the moment (I just had to give it a try, and yes, wireless works great on it if nothing else) but I'm going to put Mandriva 2008.0 back on it (all my other computers run Mandriva, it's one of the best distros in my opinion). So, I have concluded that I may just turn the card off in the bios and purchase an external adapter. Now my question is, has anyone any advice for an external wireless adapter? My laptop does not have pcmia but does have what I believe to be a mini-pci expansion slot. So, it has to be mini-pci or USB. What works with 2008.0? Any help is much appreciated!

Thank you

64 bit version of One 2008, list of all installable apps? (Community Chat...)

dim, 10/21/2007 - 07:00
I've done a fair amount of searching for answers, probably right in front of my face, but I don't see them.

When will there be a 64 bit version of One released, approximately, if it will be available? I see a 64 bit version of free, but not one. I have a limited amount of bandwidth per 30 days (7.5GB), so I can't really download much more than about 700 megs or so, because I'm always very close to my limit, so I can't really try the free version.

Is there a list of all installable packages somewhere? Sauerbraten for one (download eventually), and a few others. I can install on my own, but I'd like to know what is already available before I download/try out this distro. I've gotten to a couple different repository mirrors, but don't see that yet in their lists.

I thought I saw somewhere that One only supports/sees less than 1GB of ram due to the Kernel, and the kernel would need changed to support more, is this true?

I have 4GB ram, and use 2GB+ often. I also use the proprietery Nvidia drivers for my Nvidia 8600gt. Thanks for any answers or suggestions

[mdv 2008] Syntek driver for webcam on asus Laptop (Laptops...)

dim, 10/21/2007 - 04:00
In contrib media there is a syntek driver (dkms and syntek)

As i have a syntek webcam integrated on my asus webcam i've tried ... but it doesn't work.

What i've done is simply installed the two rpms (dkms and driver) and reboot. It seems that the module is compiled but in kopete no image (the led of the webcam is not light so i guess it is not ok)

Should i do anything else ?
