Mandriva Linux Globetrotter FAQ

Why would I need GlobeTrotter ?

You're used to work under your Linux environment and you want to keep it everywhere you go, without the constraint of a laptop.
You have to work on someone else's computer but you don't want to use their operating system or applications, so their configuration is not modified.
You need to share, create or play multimedia files on any computer.
You have to give a presentation in a conference or a show using a computer, and you want to be free as possible for the operating system you'll be running.

What are the differences between GlobeTrotter and Move ?
GlobeTrotter extends the concept of mobility introduced by Move thanks to the integration of a hard drive as storage media. The hard drive allows you to run a complete Mandriva Linux 10 as well as storing all your files (video, music, office, etc.).

Why is there a MiniCD ?
On most of the latest computers, you won't need the boot MiniCD; you just have to select the USB boot option in the computer's BIOS. However, if your BIOS doesn't provide the USB boot option, you'll be able to boot from the MiniCD which will launch the hard drive. You can then remove the MiniCD.

Does GlobeTrotter make changes to the host computer ?
No it truly doesn't. The whole operating system is loaded from the external hard drive, and GlobeTrotter doesn't make changes to the host computer internal hard drive. That said, you can read the files stored on the internal hard drive. You can even write data on it, but nothing happens without your knowing.

Is GlobeTrotter Mac-compatible?
No. It can be used as a storage device, but not as an operating system - the reason why is that it is based on Mandriva Linux 10.0, which is not available for PPC architectures.

Is it necessary to configure GlobeTrotter for each computer ?
No it isn't. GlobeTrotter automatically detects and configures the hardware of each computer. In addition, once a computer is configured, all the configuration files are stored in a hardware profile, so the informations are available for the next use of this computer. Storing the hardware profile speeds up the following boot.

What happens during the first boot of GlobeTrotter ?
At the first boot, GlobeTrotter opens a configuration wizard before launching the system. You are asked to choose, among other things, your language, the root password, and the user's identity.

What happens in case of system corruption ?
If a problem occurs with the system due to a wrong command, you can reset the software package in its original configuration by using the restoration script on the boot MiniCD. You just have to put the MiniCD in the drive and choose the restoration option.

How is the hard drive powered up ?
The hard drive is powered through the USB cable. However, if the power offered by the computer's USB port is not sufficient, you can use an additional power supply cable, pluggable in USB or PS/2.

Can GlobeTrotter be upgraded to future versions of Mandriva Linux?
This is not officially supported by Mandriva. It should be possible (and not too difficult if you know Mandriva Linux well) but we won't be able to give you any support if you choose to do so.
