This is an overview of the MandrivaSecurity Multi Network Firewall's Terms of Use which defines how this product may be used, redistributed and resold. To ensure that this product covers the needs of the largest segment of customers, Mandriva offers a dual-licensing model for MandrivaSecurity MNF. This product is essentially Open Source Software. Users are strongly encouraged to purchase a commercial license with the product for any use in a production environment. Organizations will prefer the commercial license since it provides access to support and maintenance offers and warranties for each installed server.

   In short:

• Basically, the MandrivaSecurity Multi Network Firewall (MNF) components are covered by the General Public License or similar Open Source Software licenses (see: http://www.fsf.org/licenses/licenses.html and http://www.fsf.org/licenses/license-list.html). You may install, use and redistribute MNF as long as you conform to the terms of use listed on the product. The terms include conforming to the Open Source Software License (and like) for all components while also conforming to Mandriva's intellectual rights and trademark protection.

• In a production environment, it is highly recommended that users purchase a Commercial License Agreement which applies to all of the product components developed by Mandriva. The Commercial License Agreement provides extended guaranties for the product such as access to support and maintenance offerings and the possibility to build and redistribute a derivative product with commercial licensing.

• We advise resellers who want to resell the Multi Network Firewall product to conform to Mandriva's intellectual rights and trademark protections listed in the product, or enter a redistribution agreement with Mandrivasoft before distributing the product.

Q. What is a dual-licensing model ?

Mandriva's copyrighted code is distributed under two different licences: the General Public Licence (GPL) and the MandrivaSecurity MNF Commercial license. Depending on your goals, one of these licenses will better match your needs than the other. You are free to choose one license or the other.

Q. Most components in your Software are covered by a Free Software license. How can you create a dual-license?

Only the components created by Mandriva are under dual-license. All other components retain their own license and terms.

Q. What are the main differences between the two licenses?

The license for the MNF download edition does not allow you to commercially distribute the program or to change the code without releasing the modifications under the GPL license. With the commercial edition, you may sell the product and make any changes to the source code. Also note that only the commercial licence provides access to Mandriva support and easy software updating.

Q. I am a VAR or reseller who wants to provide your solution to my customers. Can I use the Download Edition?

Yes, you may sell the Download Edition by conforming to all of Mandriva's intellectual rights and trademark protections listed in the product (this includes removing Mandrivasoft logos & trademarks from the product). It is much simpler to enter a distribution agreement with Mandriva for the Commercial Edition.

Q. Is it possible to try the Download Edition first, and then purchase the Commercial Edition or purchase a Commercial License?

Certainly, there is no problem in doing so. Technically speaking, the products are identical.

   Finally, what is the recommendation?

For all organizations we recommend the commercial product or the commercial license. Not only does this free you from several requirements of the GPL license which might be incompatible with your project, it also provides product warranties and access to important services such as support & easy updating.

For all Free Software enthusiasts or those who just want to try the product, we recommend MNF under the Free Software license. We believe it's important that Mandriva continues to provide the use of its products under a true Free Software license, even if it doesn't provide any guarantees or extra service.

For anyone in doubt, we recommend the commercial license. Due to the way that we release our software, Mandriva is able to sell commercially licensed products, such as Multi Network Firewall, at very affordable prices. Purchasing a commercial license is also the best way to ensure the continued development of our products, including the full-featured MNF.
